What Makes a Gaming CPU

Gaming is unlike productivity in one critical way: it's almost entirely single-thread and cache-bound. Most modern game engines can't saturate more than 8 fast cores, and the difference between a "fast enough" CPU and a "best in class" CPU is often measured in how quickly it can feed data to the GPU — which is where L3 cache becomes everything. AMD's 3D V-Cache chips (the "X3D" variants) stack an extra 64MB of L3 cache directly on the compute die, and the resulting ~15% gaming uplift is why they've dominated the gaming benchmark charts for three generations.

The flip side: X3D chips are specialist tools. They're not necessarily the best at productivity workloads like video rendering or code compilation — the non-3D variants or Intel's Arrow Lake often win there. So your pick depends on whether the machine is gaming-only or a mixed-use workstation.

Pairing Notes

  • Match the platform. AM5 chips need an AM5 motherboard (B650 or X670); AM4 chips need B550/X570; Intel Core Ultra needs LGA 1851. Don't mix and match.
  • Don't overbuy the CPU relative to the GPU. A $700 CPU paired with a $300 GPU is a wasted budget allocation. Use our bottleneck calculator to check balance.
  • Cooling matters for the top chips. 170W TDPs need 280mm+ AIO liquid coolers to stay at peak boost clocks. Stock coolers need not apply.
